The mail order bride phenomenon commonly taking place today is by no means a new one. It's a known fact that the early settlers of the American continent, and the Australian continent especially the gold prospectors, the majority of whom were men, were not able to find brides in the new lands they found themselves in. Therefore, they had to turn to Europe with the expectation of securing a female partner, and bride many wrote letters back to family asking if a bride could be found for them, a friend of a friend etc many of these settlers were of Russian and European origin. Many families organized arranged marriages for these men. The name mail order bride arose out of this situation as many women back in Europe looking for a better life also started to advertise there photos in magazines for the new settlers in America to look through. Russian women were high on the priority list for these men as they were known to make the best wives so the term Russian Mail Order Bride stemmed from these early days of settlement.
There was a big resurgence in the mail order bride business Once the Berlin Wall fell in November of 1989, and also as a consequence of the efforts of then-Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, it was like a dam holding back a sea of beautiful Russian/Ukrainian women had finally been breached.

Not soon after the events which took place in 1989 and especially after the Soviet Union as we knew it began to dissolve in 1991, the idea of taking a bride who hailed from Russia began to take hold. This country, as we know, constituted the major part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, along with the Ukraine and Georgia and several smaller satellite countries.

Russian/Ukrainian women had always been known by the sophisticated among us as being among the most beautiful, generous and kindest of all the women in Europe and the far eastern territories of the European continent. In fact, an open secret among men looking for a possible spouse involving a European woman was that it was now possible to date and maybe eventually marry Russian/Ukrainian women who looked like a super model and cooked like a world class chef!

The most beautiful element in this equation has always been the loyalty, kindness and compassion shown by a Russian/Ukrainian bride to her new husband. Maybe it's a product of generations of such matchmaking in their native land, but no other woman comes close to being immediately comfortable in such a relationship, even though she may only have known her husband for a relatively short amount of time before marrying.
My Great Great Grandfather and his wife who arrived in Australia in 1848 was from around where Ukraine is today after 12 months my great great grandfathers wife passed away due to influenza. After the death of his wife he wrote back home to his family over there who organized a mail order bride for him she was of Russian origin and is my great great grandmother. They had two sons and a daughter both of the sons one of whom is my great grandfather also married women from Europe my great grandfather married my great grandmother who was from Ukraine the other son married a woman from Poland. My great grandfather had two sons one of whom is my grandfather and he married a woman from Ukraine and the other son married a woman from Germany. My father and his brother were the ones that broke the tradition by marrying Australian women one of whom was my mother and I also broke the tradition by marring an Australian woman. After a 20 year marriage with my wife ended I ended up by chance meeting and marrying a lovely lady from Ukraine so you could say in our family it has gone full circle.
